Situations where wisdom teeth need to be extracted
Whether wisdom teeth need to be extracted needs to be judged comprehensively based on their growth status and potential hazards. Even if there are no pain symptoms, extraction is still recommended in the following situations:
Abnormal growth affects the health of adjacent teeth
If the X-ray shows that the wisdom teeth are in an anterior tilt, horizontal or inverted impacted state, and have caused root resorption, caries or loosening of adjacent teeth, they need to be extracted even if there are no symptoms.
There is a blind spot for cleaning
When the position of wisdom teeth erupts too much to the buccal/lingual side, or the gums form blind pockets that cause food to be impacted, making it difficult to clean thoroughly, it is easy to cause caries or periodontitis and should be extracted as soon as possible.
Abnormal occlusal function
If there is occlusal interference with the opposing teeth, which affects normal chewing movement or temporomandibular joint movement, the interference source needs to be eliminated by tooth extraction.
Orthodontic treatment needs
In order to obtain sufficient space and prevent recurrence when correcting tooth arrangement, it is often necessary to extract impacted or insufficient eruption space wisdom teeth.
Repeated food impaction
Long-term food impaction can easily lead to caries on the adjacent teeth. In such cases, even if there is no pain temporarily, preventive extraction should be performed.
Special note: Wisdom teeth with normal eruption position, occlusal function and no complications can be retained without preventive extraction. It is recommended to develop an individualized treatment plan through oral examination combined with imaging evaluation.
